Track and field athletes earn top CIS honours

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Varsity Blues distance runner, Megan Brown, and pole-vaulter, Suzanne Fish, were honoured Thursday as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) presented its track and field individual major awards for the 2006-07 season.

Brown was awarded the Tissot – female athlete of the year (track).  As the reigning CIS championship female MVP and the gold medalist at the 2006 CIS cross country championships, she has not lost a race in either Canada or the United States in 2007. The physical and health education student enters this year’s nationals ranked first in CIS in the 1000m (2:46.07), 1500m (4:19.78) and 3000m (9:12.70) after claiming OUA gold in the 1500, shattering an 18-year-old conference record. She also anchored the Varsity Blues 4 x 800 relay to victory at the OUA meet.

Megan is ranked 3rd in the mile and 6th in the 3000m, in North America, thanks in large part to her performances at the Terrier Classic (Boston) on January 27th and the Meyo Classic (Notre Dame), February 3, 2007.

Suzanne Fish, presented with the CIS female student-athlete community award, tied the OUA pole vault record and broke the University of Toronto school record at the conference championships with a leap of 3.90 metres.

A masters’ student in political economy of development, Fish devotes any spare time she has to writing reports on the activities of Canadian multi-national corporations working in developing countries with the Umuchinshi Initiative International Human Rights Working Group. She educates the public in classrooms and at community events about global issues and UNICEF’s work and aids in the coordination of fundraising events to support education and rehabilitation program for victims of conflict in northern Uganda through Gulu Walk. Fish provides emotional support and academic tutoring to a 12 year-old foster child with the Children’s Aid Foundation and on top of that translates HIV/AIDS information manuals from English to French for distribution in the Congo.

The 2007 CIS track and field championships get under way Thursday at McGill University. Friday’s competition begins at 1:30 p.m. and is expected to end by 9:30 p.m. The three-day meet will wrap-up on Saturday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
