Did you graduate more than five years ago?
For both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs, applicants who graduated five or more years ago without achieving sufficiently high standing for admission as outlined above may be considered for admission if in the intervening period they have done significant relevant work. Such applicants must present substantial evidence that, in the interval since graduation, they have achieved qualifications at least equivalent to those stated in the preceding sections. Where relevant, significant professional accomplishments and contributions to the field will be taken as evidence of equivalent qualifications. Such students may be required to take remedial courses.

English language requirements
It is essential that all incoming graduate students have a good command of written and spoken English. If you have been educated outside Canada, your primary language is not English and you have graduated from a university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, you must demonstrate your facility in the English language.

Do I have to demonstrate my language skills before I apply?
Evidence that language requirements have been met should be provided at the time of application. The SGS and the Department of Exercise Sciences require that this requirement be satisfied using one of the following tests:

  • the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For the Internet-based test we require an overall score of 93 with 22 for the Writing and Speaking sections. The computer test requires a minimum overall score of 237 and a minimum score of 5 is required in the Essay Rating;
  • the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) (minimum score of 85 required)
  • the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (minimum score of 7.0 required).
  • COPE requires a minimum socre of 76 with at least 22 in each component and 32 in wirting.

Where can I get more information?
Applicants may obtain further information concerning the administration of these tests by consulting with the School of Graduate Studies.
