Sport Science & Research: Funding Opportunity
Important Information
Thank you for your interest in the Research Program in Applied Sport Sciences (RPASS) of the Ministry of Health Promotion (MHP) in conjunction with the Canadian Sport Centres – Ontario (CSC –O) and the Centre for High Performance Sport at the University of Toronto. Before you apply for funding, please read the following information concerning the grant application process.
The goal of the RPASS program is to fund research that will assist the provincial plan for developing excellence in sport. www.mhp.gov.on.ca/en/active2010/about/strategies.asp.
The 2010 RPASS application cycle will accept proposals across the spectrum of sport sciences but with particular interest in the following areas: biomechanics, motor learning, physiology, psychology, sport technology/engineering and proposals that integrate two or more of these areas.
If you believe your proposed research fits the direction of RPASS, please ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:
Only researchers working with organizations in Ontario are eligible for MHP funding. The MHP flows funding to researchers through sponsoring organizations who then administer research grant funding on behalf of the grant recipient(s). To be eligible for an MHP RPASS grant, a sponsoring organization must be:
- a post-secondary institution or affiliated institution, such as a university, hospital, or research institute;or
- a non-government, non-profit sport and recreation sector organization
There are two funding opportunities for 2010 RPASS Application cycle:
- 1. Research Project. The current funding limit per research project is $10,000. Project plans should be designed with a maximum project duration of 12 months
Projects must be congruent with the aim of improving sport performance or health sciences. Projects with direct impact on sport, which evaluate alternative approaches or assess the effectiveness of current sport practices are welcome. There are various ways a RPASS research project may emerge, including, but not limited to: i) from CSC-O work with teams and athletes; ii) from sport organizations that qualify (e.g., part of Quest for Gold); iii) from sport scientists (potential link with coaches, athletes, CSC-O)
- 2. Knowledge Translation Project. The current funding limit per knowledge translation project is $1,000.
Knowledge Translation grants are intended to support efforts to increase the access to, and use of sport science research in the sport community. The primary focus is on end-of-grant knowledge dissemination which involves identifying your audience and providing the information in a format that fits their needs. Knowledge translation may employ a variety of vehicles (e.g. website development, educational pamphlet, public reports, submission to practitioner journals: e.g., Coaching Science), presentations to coaching groups, etc.). Note: RPASS Knowledge Translation projects could be used with a proposed RPASS research project or past RPASS projects.
